My next project is to replace the galvanized zinc roof at Kono Town Primary School, which is more like a colander than a roof, and re-furbish the entire three-classroom building. We will replace all the ceilings, totally re-decorate the building and install “real” blackboards and have additional desk and bench sets made, as at the present time there is not enough classroom furniture for all 116 children who attend classes. The prices of building materials in Sierra Leone are constantly increasing and the latest revised budget figure for the project is £5,400.

I hope to complete the replacement of the roof during the school summer holidays to minimize disruption to classes and we will ensure that the additional furniture is ready for September but, other items of the refurbishment may have to happen at a slightly later date. All of this is dependent on raising adequate funding to cover all the project costs. Work to remove the roof was started on Wednesday.

On the morning of 10th August, I will be doing, and hopefully completing, a twenty-mile sponsored bike ride with a target of raising £1,300 which will raise enough funds to complete the project. It is over 20 years since I’ve ridden a bike and have borrowed one, thanks Phil, had it serviced, but was a little surprised that they hadn’t fitted stabilisers!! Since then, we have had a two/three week “heatwave” so my training has been limited, but I am confident(ish) that I will be able to complete the challenge, and with cooler weather I’m now back in training.

If you would like to sponsor me you can either, visit the link below
or donate to the Club Trust Fund - Sort Code 30-90-42, A/C No 00493986 - using Bike Ride as a reference. It would be helpful if you could e-mail me and copy Martin in to advise us of any donations. Many thanks in anticipation.
