Shuttleworth Visit – 1 May 2022

At 10:00am with dry if somewhat dreary weather, members of Banbury Rotary, accompanied by guests from Probus, set off for Shuttleworth.

Shuttleworth consists primarily of a house and a remarkable collection of early aircraft. On this particular Sunday there was also a packed programme of flying displays.
The estate was bought by the Shuttleworth family in 1872 when the current house was built. The owner, Joseph Shuttleworth had made his money producing agricultural machinery at a factory in Lincolnshire where they made, amongst other things, portable steam engines and threshing machines.

During WWI the factory began building aircraft of which the most famous are the Sopwith Triplane and Sopwith Camel – the latter being credited with shooting down the Baron von Richthoffen.
Two generations later Richard Shuttleworth took up flying and built up quite a collection of old planes. Although Richard died  in an RAF night-flying exercise at age 31 early in WWII his legacy lives on as the Shuttleworth Collection.

Below are a few photos to remind members of the day.

  1. Great pictures. Timothy and I visited several WW1 and WW2 museums, mostly because he loves flying and has a nice plane. While doing my medic’s residency, there was a senior medical students with us in Twillingate called Dave Shuttleworth from Yorkshire. I doubt he is related to the aircraft Shuttleworths, but it was interesting to come across the same name.

  2. thanks, guys for a lovely day out most enjoyable. and was the trip to the triumph factory! on wednesday.
